Program Objectives & Outcomes

The Program Educational Objectives for the Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering are listed below. These objectives were developed with the input of the program's constituencies, who also participate in their periodic review. They describe the attributes the program's graduates are expected to have as they develop in their careers. The current Program Educational Objectives were modified slightly from those published in the most recent University Catalog (page 128).

Educational Objectives
The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree program is designed and executed to educate civil engineers who have the following attributes:

Program Learning Outcomes for the BSCE Degree Graduates of the program will have:

  1. an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering,
  2. an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data,
  3. an ability to design systems, components, or processes to meet desired needs within realistic constraints (such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health, safety, and sustainability)
  4. an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams,
  5. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems,
  6. an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility,
  7. an ability to communicate effectively,
  8. the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental and societal context,
  9. a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning, including an understanding of the importance of professional licensure,
  10. a knowledge of contemporary issues,
  11. an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice,
  12. an ability to apply knowledge in six technical areas in civil engineering,
  13. an ability to explain basic concepts in management, business, public policy, and  leadership.

 

Achievement of these outcomes are assessed through a variety of assessment methods. These methods and the outcomes they assess are shown in the Matrix of Outcomes Assessment Measures Table which can be accessed by clicking HERE.
